Anthony Stubbs, 23, from Pennywell in Sunderland, has secured a job as a qualified electrician with Houghton-le-Spring-based Alex Scullion Electrical Group.

Following the completion of his electrical advanced apprenticeship delivered through City of Sunderland college's apprenticeship programme, Anthony's employers were so impressed with his commitment and professional attitude they offered him a full-time position.

Anthony said: "When I finished my CSEs I wanted to do a hands-on qualification that would give me good prospects and hopefully lead to a job, so I enrolled at the college's Hylton Skills Campus.

"I knew someone who worked for Alex Scullion and thought it would be a great a place to be, so when the chance came to apply for an apprenticeship, I really wanted to give it a go. am thrilled to have completed the qualification.

"It was hard work and at times pretty tough because of all the detailed training, but the college and my employer have been very supportive which really helped."

To earn his level three advanced apprenticeship qualification, Anthony had to complete City and Guilds technical certificates in electro technical technology at level two and three on a day-release basis spread across two years, together with assessment in the workplace.

Prior to starting the advanced pathway, Anthony had achieved all its key skill requirements such as a level two communication, application of number and level one in ICT. Finally, he successfully achieved his advanced measurement two, a practical performance three-day assessment which enabled him to successfully complete the full framework.

The firm's managing director, Alex Scullion, said: "Our stock in trade is people and as such we invest time in training to get the very best team possible to service our clients to the high standard synonymous with our brand.

"We've worked with City of Sunderland College before and knew that we were going to receive a high level of support throughout the apprenticeship process, together with a hard-working and motivated individual who took their job seriously.

"From day one, Anthony has really impressed us and we were happy to fit his on-the-job training and workload around his studies at the college.
"We are big on pastoral care here and believe you should have a healthy work/life balance while working to build an individual's confidence and skills through over 40 years' experience in the sector."

Advanced apprenticeships are high-quality work-based training programmes for young people over the age of 16. Director of work-based learning at the college, Dave Hall, said: "I have seen first-hand the significant value apprenticeships can bring to organisations, individuals and our local economy.

"We know from employers such as Alex Scullion that ongoing investment in training can really help to weather tough market conditions and enables firms to go from strength to strength.

"Our congratulations go to Anthony on what is a great achievement and much thanks goes to Alex Scullion for the firm's valuable support."
